So we pick in the division of the PS to the 9 1/2 tribes settling there. Anyone remember who settled on the east side? Gad, Reuben, half tribe of Manasseh. As a reminder God does not require that you live a spirit filled life. We can choose to live a life in the flesh never really experiencing His power in our lives.
The picture we have been discussing all these weeks is that the book of Joshua is a study of ? the spirit led life.
Read Vs 6 -15
In this section we get some interesting detail on Caleb.
Caleb was one of the original 12 tribes along with Joshua.
He along with Joshua believed God and wanted to take the PS.
He was 40 years old at that time.
Moses promised to give Caleb the area he had spied out; to his descendants forever. Note: “where your foot has trodden” see .
It was 45 years since then. He was now 85 but note Vs 11 “ As yet I am as strong this day as on the day that Moses sent me; just as my strength was then, so now is my strength for war, both for going out and for coming in.”
Interesting when compared to Joshua in vs 13:1
Vs 12 Note the reason for Caleb wanting this particular area. It seems Caleb is excited because there are Giants there and no doubt it would be challenging and difficult.
From this we can draw out an application in that we should not just look to what is easily obtained. Caleb saw blessing in pursuing the difficult. Note: Lot and his choice to live in Sodom and what looked easier.
The name of the city is called Hebron. Hebron means fellowship. The former name was Kirjath Arba. Kijath means City, Arba comes from the greatest of the Anakim. means “large and loud”.
So what scared the 10 spies the most is what drew Caleb. Maybe the people or situations we fear the most are where the greatest blessings lie.

Ch 15

In this section we the lot fell to Judah to get there land first. So in the first 12 verse we are given the details of the boundaries.
Slide -
Vs 13 - 19 (read) we are given more detail into Caleb and we will see some very interesting pictures.
Caleb drives out the 3 sons of Anak (neck), Sheshai (noble), Ahiman (brother of gift), and Talmai (furrow, ridged). A picture of 3 - 10 foot super hero giants.
Vs 16 Caleb offers his daughter Achsah as wife to whoever takes Kirjath Sepher. Kirjath means? Sepher means Branches or Book. So taking out this city destoys the branches or book of the lineage.
Vs 17 tells us Othniel (lion of God) cool name; he is Caleb’s nephew does the job and gets Achsah as a wife or bride.
So the new bride Achsah asks her father for a blessing.
So let’s put our spiritual eyes on and see what the Holy Spirit is giving us here.
First lets look at Caleb. We actually are not given very much about this key player. Here is what we know:
He works in tandem with Joshua.
He is known for his strength.
He works behind the scenes mostly.
His name means “dog”. What are dogs known for? Loyalty.
He gives a bride away.
In Type we should be getting a picture as we look through our “Jesus Lens”. Ideas?
Caleb is a type of the Holy Spirit. The HS works in tandem with the our Joshua (Jesus). He is called the “Helper” or paraklete who come along side. The HS does not seek His own glory but that of Jesus.
Achsah, Caleb’s daughter, the bride is a type of who? the Church.
In our text the bride (Achsah) as her father (Caleb) for a blessing, a second blessing. She had been given the south now she ask for the springs of waters. He gives her the upper and lower springs.
So, as believers we have all been baptized into one body, see
But for those that will ask we can also receive a second baptism.

Chapter 16 Children of Joseph

The lot now falls to Joseph. Remember he had been given the “double portion” from Jacob so his two sons were counted as tribes.
Ephraim and Manasseh portray a principle we see all through out scripture and that is the blessing of the second born. So the oldest is supposed to get the double portion of the inheritance but it usually doesn’t go that way.
Cain and Able
Jacob & Esau
Ephraim and Manasseh
Why? The Holy Spirit is showing us that the Second Birth is what is important. We must be Born Again.
